The life of a professional cabaret dancer

Leah_attheLido_ByKrisAshpolePhotography_014_1_2_1

When you meet someone following their dream, leading a very different life to you; you just have to find out more.  From dance classes in rural NSW to the stage of the Paris Lido, Leah's amazing dance career has taken her around the world from the Cannes Film Festival to the Warsaw Opera, with 6 months in a circus motorcycle act thrown in for good luck!  Leah sure is kicking up her heels and living the dream. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and photographing Leah in Paris recently - we had such an amazing time taking photos in some of Paris' most iconic locations. Currently dancing in a new show in Macau while on a break with Le Lido, Leah generously took time out from her schedule to put her feet up and chat about her life as a dancer. Tell us about yourself, your background and what motivated you to...

Sydney architecture: a perfect backdrop for a portrait shoot

Shirley Hoffman_038

Mention Sydney and images of sun, surf and beaches come to mind.  While I love spending time at the beach, I also love incredible architecture and using it as a backdrop for portrait shoots.  And there is a lot to select from where I live.  Not being characterised by any one architectural style, Sydney has some fantastic examples of Gothic, Georgian, Romanesque, Italianate architecture and many other styles.   So when Shirley, a Sydney based Canadian model, actor and presenter, worked with me on a private portrait shoot, we used buildings around Macquarie Street in Sydney  and the famous Rocks area as a backdrop. On the day of the shoot, it was one of those overcast days, where rain is only a moment away.  It held off until around lunch time when it came bucketing down (no soft English or French rain for us), so we escaped and spent an hour...

Rocking a Vintage Turquoise Dress

All photos Copyright Kris Ashpole

What do you get when you mix a talented singer and performing artist with a vintage 1930's style dress and a fabulous location in Sydney?  A little bit of magic and a really fun portrait shoot. Channeling Hollywood glamour (maybe even American actress Veronica Lake), Carly-Anne chose an amazing turquoise vintage dress by London design house, John Charles for our shoot.  The dress was found by her Mum and Grandmother at an antique market in Wales (where Carly-Anne and her family are from), and was a gift for Carly-Anne. Carly-Anne wanted a range of images to display her versatility and depth as an artist so we created a series of photos and different looks based around some fab outfits - mostly found in antique markets. Our first series with the fabulous turquoise dress was shot at Sydney Hospital in Macquarie Street.  Not where you'd expect to do a fashion lead photo shoot but as Sydney's oldest hospital with buildings...

New website – win a portrait shoot

I’m excited to launch my new photography website and home (and with a few little butterflies) and to celebrate I'm giving away a portrait shoot (more on that below). My other website has been around for a while and needed a new look and feel to showcase more recent work and my focus on portraits for women.  I remember one of my photography teachers saying ‘If you don’t show your work, it’s almost like it doesn’t exist’.  So true. Inspiration for my website and portraiture often comes from my love of Europe.  So much so that some of the images included in my website are from on a recent trip to Italy, including some of my favourite frescos from the stunningly beautiful Santa Chiara Monastery in Napoli. Photography is my passion – it gives me energy and makes me feel pretty happy - I can spend many an hour absorbed in it. I love...
